KARACHI: KESC pays compensation

KARACHI, Dec 26: In an unprecedented gesture, the KESC management has acknowledged responsibility for accidental electrocution of a child and paid Rs100,000 as compensation.

Babu Lal, father of deceased Ravi, received the compensation money from KESC officials. Ravi, a resident of Grex Village in Mauripur, had died after an incident during Monday’s rain in which he had touched a ‘live’ KESC pole.

According to a spokesman, the chairman of WAPDA and KESC, Gen Zulfiqar Ali Khan, arrived from Lahore on Tuesday evening and went, along with the KESC’s MD, to Ravi’s house to condole with his family.

Since the deceased belonged to a Hindu family, prayers for the departed soul were held according to Hindu traditions. To further provide solace to Ravi’s poor family, Gen Zulfiqar ordered the KESC’s MD to give suitable employment to Mukesh, the deceased’s elder brother.

The passage of current in the ‘killer’ pole was due to a streetlight switch, which had been installed unprofessionally by the local people, claimed the KESC’s spokesman. — PPI
