Saeed digs KRL out of trouble

RAWALPINDI, Dec 22: Saeed Anwar Jr stroked an unbeaten 88 on Sunday as KRL inched towards taking a first innings lead against PIA, dismissed earlier in the day for 196 in this Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Group-IV fixture.

Thanks to Saeed and Intikhab Alam who hit 42, KRL finished the second day at 171 for five in 54.3 overs.

The shape of the home team’s innings would now depend largely on Saeed and the other not out batsman Yasir Arafat when they resume Monday.

PIA struggled as they did on the opening day and after resuming their innings at 155 for six, were all out in 78.2 overs.

Paceman Jaffar Nazir troubled the batsmen again and picked up two more wickets to finish with impressive figures of five for 44.

Rawalpindi put up a pathetic display, crashing to 133 with only opener Babar Naeem standing out, striking an unbeaten 91 in their match against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL).

After Saturday’s first day went blank because of wet conditions at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi were put in by ZTBL and could not cope with the rival attack.

Rao Iftikhar picked up four for 36 by mopping up the tail while fellow pacers Mubashir Nazir and Saad Janjua shared six wickets to wreck the top and middle order.

ZTBL in reply were 82 for two at the close of play, Hafiz Majid (28) and Rao Iftikhar (4) were together.

Despite spirited batting by debutants Khurram Manzoor and Sajid Hanif, Karachi Blues conceded a 126-run first innings lead to hosts Peshawar in the match at Arbab Niaz Stadium.

Khurram (73 off 100 balls, eight fours, one six) and Sajid (91 off 70 balls, 12 fours, four sixes) shared a fifth-wicket stand worth 86.

Tailender Imranullah used the long handle effectively to smash four sixes and two boundaries in scoring 53 off 49 balls.

Peshawar were seven for no wicket in their second innings.
