TOBA TEK SINGH, Dec 21: The city police insulted Senior Civil Judge Mohammad Afzal Zahid here on Saturday.
Sairan Bibi of Chak 396-JB had complained to District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Akram Zaki some two weeks ago that her brother, Umer Draz, had been arrested in a fake theft case and was being tortured in police custody.
The judge sent her application to Senior Civil Judge Mohammad Afzal Zahid with the direction that the case be decided by Dec 21. Judge Zahid heard the complainant and ordered the medical superintendent of DHQ hospital to examine the arrested man.
A DHQ medical board confirmed that Mr Draz was tortured and had fractured a bone as a result.
The woman told the court that in 1987, she had filed a civil suit against some police officials including SI Rana Mohammad Ajmal who was posted at the City Police Station these days. To avenge that incident, she alleged, the SI and his colleagues made a plot and illegally arrested her brother.
She accused city SHO Khizr Hayat Wahla, SI Rana Mohammad Ajmal, ASI Mohammad Saleem, Head Muharrar Mohammad Saleem, Naib Muharrar Rana Ijaz Ahmad, Naib Muharrar Mohammad Afzal and police constables Mohammad Nawaz and Abdul Hameed of fracturing her brother’s arm.
When the SHO appeared in the court on Saturday, he misbehaved with Judge Zahid and was issued a notice for contempt of court. The judge directed the SHO to stay in courtroom and file a reply to the notice, but he ran away. Later, the court ordered the city police to register a case against the SHO and seven of his colleagues.
The district Bar have condemned the SHO’s behaviour in the courtroom and demanded that he be sacked.
