Two killed as rain wreaks havoc in Karak, Dir

KARAK/TIMERGARA, July 19: Two persons, including a child, were killed and one was injured in rain related incidents as heavy downpour coupled with windstorm wreaked havoc in Karak and Lower Dir districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Police sources said that heavy rain and windstorm uprooted trees and power poles and damaged several houses in different areas of Karak district.

They said that a student identified as Mohammad Zubair, a resident of Khuram Muhammadzai, was killed when roof of his room collapsed due to heavy rain.

The residents of the area retrieved his body after hectic efforts.

They said that several houses were damaged in Palosa Sar, Walay Banda, Shamshaki, Khuram Muhammadzai, Latamber, Monaka Banda and other areas.

The power supply remained suspended to the entire Chountra area and several localities of tehsils Banda Daud Shah and Takht-i-Nusrati.

Heavy rain and storm also disrupted telephones lines in the district. Standing crops and vegetables were also damaged when rainwater inundated the fields.

The seasonal water channels damaged Sabirabad-Matoor Road and residents of Malagi Banda, Kandao Sar, Wargha Banda and Matoor areas remained stranded in their localities.

The people demanded of the authorities to open all closed routes.

The residents of the district also demanded of Pesco to restore power supply to the affected areas as early as possible.

In Lower Dir, a child was killed and another received injuries when wall of their house collapsed at Bahadar Colony of Mayar Jandol due to heavy rain and windstorm the other day.

The residents of the area said that two children of Maulvi Shamsul Haq were injured when wall of his house collapsed due to heavy rain.

The injured children were rushed to district headquarters hospital where one of them identified as nine-year-old Attaullah succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile, Pesco officials restored supply of electricity to parts of Adenzai, Talash, Mayar and Samar Bagh on Thursday.

Power supply from Chakdara grid station to Adenzai, Talash and adjacent areas was suspended due to heavy rain and windstorm on Wednesday.

The officials said that workers kept working continuously for the whole night to restore power supply to those areas.

Also, local chapter of Jamaat-i-Islami demanded of Pesco authorities to end prolonged power outage and take immediate steps for increasing voltage of electricity in Lajbok Dara area.

JI local leader Imranud Din, Saiful Islam, Obaidur Rahman and Haji Mohsin told a news conference that more than 18 hours loadshedding was observed in the area.

They said that the area was also facing problem of water shortage owing to power outages and low voltage.

They demanded installation of a separate feeder for the area and supply of electricity from Saddo grid station instead of Timer.
