FAISALABAD, Nov 20: Local additional district and sessions judge Manzoor Husain Dogar has awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs1 million each to six people in a narcotics case, here on Tuesday.
The court, however, acquitted four daughters-in-law of main convict Sardar Muhammad of Renala Khurd, Okara, giving them the benefit of the doubt.
According to the prosecution, Saddar police on an information raided a house in Chak 208 on Feb 4, 1999, and arrested ring-leader Sardar, his sons Muhammad Amjad and Muhammad Aslam, Amjad’s wife Uzma, Anwar’s widow Rubeena, Asghar’s wife Nargis, Akbar’s wife Shahana and Muhammad Jamil, all hailing from 21/2-L, Renala Khurd. They also arrested Wasim Hassan of Okara and Muhammad Iftikhar of Lahore.
The team recovered 170 kilograms of heroin, 51 kilograms of chemicals used in the preparation of heroin, cash, gold ornaments and huge quantity of illicit weapons, including a repeater, a kalashnikove and three pistols.
The convicts Muhammad Amjad, Muhammad Aslam, Muhammad Sardar, Muhammad Jamil, Wasim Hassan and Muhammad Iftikhar were awarded life imprisonment under section 9(C)/34 of the Control of Narcotics Substance Act, 1997. They have also been fined Rs1 million each. In case of non-payment, they have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years each.
The judge acquitted all the females and ordered they would keep the household goods and gold ornaments which were not received through foul means. They were arrested in Feb 1999 and remained in jail till the decision.
The court observed the culprits were responsible for creating problems for the youth.
Sardar Muhammad reportedly contested elections from Okara as an independent candidate against IJI nominee Pir Sajjad Haider from NA-111 in 1990 general elections. He also won the election of councillor of local bodies in 1993.
Looted: Dacoits looted cash and gold ornaments and drove away with a car and four motorcycles in various strikes in the city during the last 24 hours.
Three dacoits stormed into local trader Shahid Ali’s house in Dhobi Ghat, held up the inmates and fled with Rs16,000 in cash and jewellery worth Rs50,000.
Meanwhile, a gang took away cash and gold ornaments worth Rs30,000 from Tahir Javed’s house in Shadab Colony. They also drove away with his car (FDT-1767) from the garage.
Two bandits drove away with a motorcycle (FDM-4050) of Excise and Taxation inspector Ahmad Butt in Kaleem Shaheed Colony when he was on his way back home from office.
Three bandits drove away with a motorcycle of Wasa employee Muhammad Akmal in Gokhuwal near Nishatabad police station.
A student Muhammad Wasim was deprived of his motorcycle (FDW-5253) from Rasheed Nagar while a two-wheeler of local trader Shahid Ali was taken away by bandits in Ali Housing Colony.
REVENUE COLLECTION: Executive District Officer (revenue) Mian Kamal Din has directed the revenue officers to ensure recovery of government dues.
He was presiding over a meeting of the revenue officers of the district here on Tuesday. He took note of the poor performance of Tandlianwala circle.
The meeting was informed that over Rs188 million government dues have been recovered in the district during the 10 months of the year 2001. A sum of Rs19.8 million has been recovered during October.
The recovered amounts included Abyana Rs41.9 million; agriculture income tax Rs50.1 million; cooperative bank Rs33.1 million; Agricultural Development Bank Rs19.7 million; local rate Rs1.3 million; mutation fee Rs3.6 million; stamp duty Rs2.2 million and arrears of miscellaneous government dues over Rs33 million.
COMPUTERIZED CARDS: National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has started delivery of computerized national identity cards to the applicants in Faisalabad district.
This was stated by NADRA district registrar Qamaruz Zaman here on Tuesday.
He asked the applicants to check their particulars in the their computerized cards before receiving them. In case of any wrong entry, they should fill up a new form with correct particulars and hand it over to the NADRA representative. The corrections will be made free of cost.
