Impeachment of French president

Published December 13, 2002

PARIS, Dec 12: An advisory committee of legal scholars says that the French Constitution should be amended in such a way that France might henceforth impeach its head of state, if it so desires.

The recommendation is being made in an 80-page document being handed over to President Jacques Chirac.

According to the recommendation being delivered to President Chirac by Pierre Avril, the professor of constitutional law — who served as president of the Commission de Reflexion, French parliamentarians are being asked to amend Article 68 of the French Constitution in such a way that they be accorded the same powers given to legislators in the US Constitution by which they can impeach the president.
