TAIPEI, Nov 18: Cuba on Sunday crushed the United States 5-3 in the final of the 2001 Baseball World Cup to retain the seventh crown in a row.
The US ranked second while Chinese Taipei won a bronze medal after beating Japan 3-0 in another game earlier in the day.
Cuba have won six Baseball World Cup titles since 1984, winning their last in Italy in 1998.
The US struck for one run on the bottom of the fourth inning for a 2-2 tie until the eighth when Cuban batters struck for three more runs. The US managed to add one run in their last offensive attempt.
In another game Sunday, Panama edged out South Korea 3-2 to rank fifth. South Korea ended at sixth.—AFP
