HYDERABAD, Dec 1: Sindh irrigation and power secretary Mohammad Hashim Leghari has said recharge dams will be constructed in Nagarparkar, Thatta, Dadu and Larkana districts to meet shortage of water.

Presiding over a meeting of senior officers of the irrigation department at the Jamshoro rest house on Saturday, Leghari directed the officials to take necessary steps to include these schemes in the next year’s Annual Development Programme.

He also directed chief engineers and other officials concerned to prepare PC-I of these projects by Dec 31 so that the same could be submitted to the planning and development department and the federal government for approval.

He said in the first phase, work would be started on Mole, Daw, Darwat and Gaaj recharge dams.

Leghari said construction of recharge dams in the hilly areas of the province was aimed at improving the irrigation system and bringing about development in the agriculture sector.

He expressed the hope that after the construction of these dams, the shortage of irrigation water would be removed in Thar, Dadu, Thatta and Larkana districts and more land would be brought under cultivation.

TRAINING: The Sindh secretary for livestock and fisheries, Imtiaz Kazi, will inaugurate a 10-day training programme on “Participatory Diseases Surveillance” at the Research and Training Institute for Livestock, Tando Mohammad Khan, on Dec 11. The programme is being organized in collaboration with the European Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization with a view to controlling and monitoring animal diseases.
