HYDERABAD, Nov 22: Consultants should be appointed to study conditions of Hyderabad and suggest proper utilization of funds, to be released from the Sindh governor’s special grant of Rs500 million for the city.

This was demanded by members of the Hyderabad district council here on Thursday during a discussion over condition of the city, in the presence of the director-general, Hyderabad Development Authority, the managing director, Water and Sewerage Agency, and the director, building control department.

Holding the HDA responsible for destruction of the city, Latifabad and Qasimabad, district council members demanded Rs500 million funds should not be given to the HDA, as it had failed to improve conditions of the city, despite spending millions of rupees.

Mohammad Yousuf Qureshi said manholes were taking lives of children because of inefficiency of Wasa staff, and added while the HDA and Wasa officials were making big plans, they were least bothered about the areas, which remained inundated under sewerage water.

Q. Mohammad Hakim urged the Sindh governor to ensure that the finance department would deduct the amount of Wasa dues against different government departments at source.

Qazi Abdul Qadeer deplored Hyderabad was the only city of the country, which had been denied subsidy by the government, whereas the other cities continued to receive the subsidy.

Rauf Jafri pointed out despite ban on the construction of multi-storey buildings, such buildings were constructed in the city, but the building control department did not take notice of it.

He said it was a great injustice the city, whose sewerage and drainage infrastructure had completely collapsed, was given Rs110 million, whereas Qasimabad was also given the same amount.

Dr Ayaz Arain said consultants should be appointed to study conditions of the city and propose proper utilisation of the funds. He said an emergency should be declared to launch development work on war footings.

Labour councillor Rana Mehmood Ali Khan suggested proper planning for the city.

WOMAN INJURED: A woman was manhandled and injured on Thursday night by some of the residents of Shah Faisal colony.

Ayub Rajput, claiming to be a representative of the area’s Yakjehti Council, along with Haneef, Nadeem, and a press reporter/photographer visited the house of Khursheed Begum, wife of Abdul Hameed Kashmiri.

Heated debate ensued about the ownership of the house and abusive language was used against the housewife. She was injured after she was hit with a blunt item on her head.

She was taken to the Civil Hospital after the police had issued a letter for a medical report.

According to the SHO of Makki Shah police station, Nadeem is a clerk in the Sindh Public Service Commission and is the brother of a police constable named Naveed.

He said that Kashmiri had been involved in unlawful activities in the past but was now earning his livelihood through lawful means. He said that some of the residents of the area had filed an application against Kashmiri but the veracity of the complaints could not be established even by the TPO, Cantonment.

The SHO said that a non cognisable case has been lodged against Ayub, Haneef and Nadeem on the complaint of Khursheed Begum.
