DERA GHAZI KHAN, Nov 15: District Nazim Jamal Khan Leghari has sent a report regarding the Shadan Lond incident to the Punjab governor, while various agencies are conducting a probe into the matter.
According to sources, Jamal Leghari had informed the higher authorities on Nov 8 through a letter about the poor strategy of police regarding Nov 9 strike. In his letter, he also mentioned the trouble spots, including Shadan Lond and Kala.
In his report, the sources said, Mr Leghari had also mentioned his letter to the higher authorities.
According to the report, the protesters started placing boulders on the track at 3am. Government agencies, including the Kala police, were aware of the situation, but they were not present at the Shadan Lond railway station to prevent any untoward incident. The train could be stopped at the Dera Ghazi Khan railway station, but Kala police did not inform the authorities concerned about the situation.
The SSP informed the Nazim about the blockade of rail traffic at 8am, and said some 250 people had stopped the Chiltan Express at Shadan Lond. He also claimed that the situation was under control.
According to the report, the district police officer did not provide proper information to the district Nazim. He also slapped a representative of the protesters in front of the mob. By that time, the protesters were peaceful, but after this incident, they started hurling stones on police. The police opened indiscriminate fire on the crowd, killing three persons on the spot.
The Nazim was told by the police that the protesters wanted to hold talks with him. He reached the spot where the angry mob tried to assault him. They held him hostage in a mosque where the DSP and the DIG were already kept as hostage. The protesters alleged that the firing order was given by Jamal Leghari, but he assured them that he had not passed such an order. Later, he was released.
According to the report, the police force present at the railway station opened indiscriminate fire on the people who had blocked the rail traffic. Rubber bullets were not used to disperse the protesters, while only eight to fifteen shells of teargas were fired to disperse the angry mob. And the police did not warn the protesters before firing.
In his report, Nazim Jamal Leghari said the Section 144 was imposed on the request of the SSP.
He also suggested in his report that the families of the deceased should be compensated, while the SSP and other responsible persons should be booked and suspended from service.
