PESHAWAR, Nov 5: The student community on Tuesday observed black day protesting the proposed University Model Act at the University of Peshawar.

They wore black armbands and boycotted classes to register their anguish over the proposed act and asked the government to defer its implementation in the interest of the students and the teacher community.

The students began gathering at the STC at the campus in the morning, and later participated in a walk which culminated at the University of Engineering and Technology.

While addressing the student rally, the IJT campus nazim, Waqas Ahmad Khan, slammed the government for introducing the University Model Act. He said that the Act was part of a conspiracy hatched by some groups to deprive the students from getting education.

The establishment of the board of governors at the educational institutions was aimed at giving a free hand to non-professional individuals to play havoc with the education.

Khan said that it was a common problem of the students and teachers and both should join hands to counter government’s offensive against the educational institutions.

The students from the University of Peshawar, University of Engineering and Technology, and the NWFP Agricultural University took part in the protest.
