THE Karachi situation is getting from bad to worse and is definitely out of the control of the present government. Both the provincial and federal governments have miserably failed to control the unabated killings in the city.

The so-called experts have given various solutions to control the daily killings in the city in different TV talk shows. I have been listening to the former director-generals of Intelligence Bureau, ISI and police chiefs who could do nothing during their own tenures and now they claim to be the wizards and offering solutions.

The main problem of Karachi is that the people at the helm of the affairs are complacent and do not want their henchmen get arrested.

The 91 so-called killers who have been arrested by law-enforcement agencies are just to pacify the Karachi public. They would be produced in various courts with their faces covered and later released for lack of evidence.

Having some experience in anti-terrorism operations during the mid-1980s in Punjab where I produced results by not compromising the national interest and at times got some of my friends/relatives arrested as they had either links or information about terrorist groups.

There was no political interference in my work. I had my own information network and never totally relied on intelligence agencies’ network. The agencies sometimes feed wrong information to protect their men.

I can offer some suggestions to resolve the Karachi situation. The first step is the will to do the job by the government.

The second step is to hand over the control of Karachi for at least three months to the General Officer Commanding, Karachi, who should have a team of professionals in intelligence work. There should not be any political interference from the local or the federal government in his work.

The next step should be to close down all consulates in Karachi and all foreigners should be deported from Karachi immediately.

The fourth step is to arrest all activists of various parties even if they belong to the ruling coalition and hand them over to the JIT for finding out the masterminds who are out to create anarchy in Karachi or in the country.

If handlers of militant groups are from foreign intelligence agencies, they should be named clearly. We should not indulge into diplomacy at the cost of the country’s sovereignty. The agents involved in such brutal killings of innocent people of Karachi should be brought to justice.
