KHAIRPUR, Nov 3: The additional secretary, education, Sindh, Anwar Zai, has said Sindh is the only province where primary education has been made compulsory.

Speaking at the Educational Festival, organized by the Indus Resource Centre (IRC), here on Sunday, he said students of class 5 to 10 would get free education.

He said an individual getting the teacher of the year award would be given Rs170,000 prize in three instalments.

He expressed hope the policies would improve the standard of education and the literacy rate.

He informed a website had been launched, where the teachers could see the order of their seniority for promotion.

Anwar Zai said management committees had been constituted at schools, which would have the last word about appointment and termination of teachers.

The district Nazim, Nafisa Shah, said programmes like the Educational Festival should be organized every year.

The executive director, IRC, Sadiqa Salahuddin, hailed teachers and students of far-flung areas of the district for making the festival a success.

Earlier, the secretary, education, Sindh, Nazar Hussain Maher, inaugurated the festival.

Our Nawabshah Correspon-dent adds: The Sindh minister for education, Khan Mohammad Dahri, has said that a training programme for School Management Supervision was being started to train 3,220 junior school teachers and 2,100 higher secondary school teachers and would be completed by Dec 31.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of the course at the Provincial Institute of Teachers Education (PITE), Nawabshah, on Saturday.

He said that a cash prize of Rs20,000 for 20 best male and female teachers of the district would be given for their services and for promotion of quality education.

He said that a cash award of Rs30,000 would also be given to the best teacher of the district.

He said that the PITE was the only institution in Sindh which offered a diploma in education, junior and secondary school teachers’ courses, workshops and other educational courses.

Speaking on the occasion, the district coordination officer, Abdul Qadir Mangi, said that out of Rs9.25 million for non-development works, an amount of Rs7 million would be spent on improving the education department.

The director general, PITE, also spoke on the occasion.
