KARACHI, Nov 1: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Friday decided to organise a four-team Super League one-day tournament in Lahore during the holy month of Ramazan.
PCB’s domestic body, Cricket Management Committee (CMC), which met at Gaddafi Stadium agreed to hold the tournament, titled as Super League Ramazan Cup, from Nov 11 to 27 between teams picked by national chief selector Wasim Bari.
The only reason to hold this one-day competition could be that Pakistan have to announce a list of 30 probables for the World Cup before the ICC’s deadline of Nov 30 and the PCB trying to unearth a few promising players.
Initially, this double league tournament was scheduled to be staged from March 25, 2003 — two days after the end of World Cup in South Africa — concurrently alongside the Super League first-class championship.
It was also decided that five of the 13 matches — all of them at Gaddafi Stadium — will be played under floodlights.
Wasim Akram, Misbah-ul-Haq and Azhar Mahmood, named in the Pakistan one-day squad for Zimbabwe, are expected to play in the first few games before they leave for Bulawayo in mid-November.
According to CMC, the event will be provide ideal opportunity for young players to stake claims for inclusion in Pakistan squad. The tournament is also part of PCB’s talent hunt drive as the best performers will be considered for selection in national junior and academy squads.
PCB, at the moment, are working out deals with several companies to sponsor the tournament. It has also been agreed in principle that titles of four teams will be named after sponsors.
Moreover, CMC, also took a number of decisions regarding running of domestic competitions Friday.
A third team from Karachi will play in the Cornelius Trophy, previously known as Quaid Trophy Grade-II. Wit Afghanistan also playing, a total of 25 teams will feature in the tournament starting from Jan 21.
CMC, furthermore, agreed to finalize the promotion and relegation system. Two teams from associations and one department side finishing bottom in the first-class Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Cricket Championship will be relegated to next season’s Cornelius Trophy and Kardar Trophy respectively.
Quaid-i-Azam Trophy, the oldest and country’s most prestigious tournament featuring 14 associations, 10 departments and a PCB XI, begins from Dec 21. The PCB Trophy, to be contested by 28 association teams, will be staged from Feb 19.
Patron’s Cup national one-day tournament, scheduled to commence from Feb 26, features 16 teams — eight top departments and a similar number of top association sides — of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy.
Likewise, two last-placed teams in Cornelius Trophy will be demoted to PCB Trophy while both the finalists of PCB Trophy will earn promotion to Cornelius Trophy.
Kardar Trophy winners, to be decided in the final between PTCL and Sui Gas, starting from Saturday at Muridke, have the advantage of being promoted to next season’s Quaid-i-Azam Trophy along with the two finalists of the Cornelius Trophy.
Meanwhile, finalists of National Junior Cup (Under-19) Grade-III are to be elevated to Grade-II; finalists of Grade-II promoted to Grade-I. The bottom placed teams of Grade-I and Grade-II will be relegated to Grade-II and Grade-III respectively for the 2003-2004 season.
