KARACHI: Two kidnapped boys recovered

Published November 2, 2002

KARACHI, Nov 1: Police have recovered two teenage boys who had been kidnapped five days ago, with the help of the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee.

Police said Saeed Ahmed, 12, was kidnapped for ransom in Block-N of North Nazimabad five days back and FIR 181/2002 was registered at Taimuria police station. Police, with the help of the CPLC, began investigations. During the investigations, they came to know that another boy, Noman, 18, was also kidnapped together with Saeed.

The kidnappers contacted Saeed’s family at its house by phone, demanding a ransom of Rs10 million for the release of the hostage. The kidnappers did not contact Noman’s family, police added.

The CPLC’s central chief, Murad Soni, said they traced the phone calls, which were made, through satellite phone, probably from abroad. The car in which the boys were kidnapped was traced. It came to light that Khalid, alias Guddu, had kidnapped Saeed and Noman. Khalid, resident of Rawalpindi, was a first cousin of Noman, and he was in touch with the kidnappers abroad.

He said Khalid’s family were taken into custody, and they were asked to tell Khalid to release the boys. Negotiations were held for three days after which the two boys were released, and they returned home. Efforts were being made to arrest all those involved in the kidnapping.

However, sources claimed, the investigation wing of police was not taking interest in apprehending the culprits as police were terming the kidnapping a “drama.” The sources said police had almost reached the culprits, but they were allegedly trying to strike a deal with them.

The sources said if the kidnapping was a “drama,” then the FIR 181/2002 too should be false and a counter-FIR should be registered against the complainant under section 482 of PPC for misleading police and registering a false case.

The sources said police were reluctant to register a counter-FIR, as they could not substantiate their stand as regards their claim about the kidnapping of the two boys being a “drama.”
