LAHORE, Oct 29: Former Pakistan captain Intikhab Alam has termed PCB’s decision to deduct overall 20 per cent match fee of the players in case of a defeat “an attempt to put players under pressure” and said it would not serve any purpose and can further deteriorate the performance of the team.

“Instead of concentrating on bettering their individual performance the players would be thinking about the deduction of their match fee in case of a defeat and such thoughts can bring negative results,” he said in an interview here Tuesday.

“It is not a balanced system which PCB has announced it would not serve any purpose but will keep players under pressure,” he said.

“Through the newly introduced system players will be feeling uncertainty as their all the thoughts will be confined to deduction of match fee,” he added.

Meanwhile, captain Waqar Younis Tuesday welcomed a decision to penalise players for defeat and dispense rewards for victory.

“I think it will bear positive results and be a great motivation for the players to thwart a defeat and always go for the win,” Waqar said.

“I do not see it as a threat and hope that players will do their best to cash in on these incentives,” the Pakistani captain said.

Pakistan’s once stellar cricket team has gone into steep decline in the last three months, most recently suffering a 3-0 Test series drubbing at the hands of Australia earlier this month during a “ home” series in the UAE and Sri Lanka.

“Pakistani cricket will improve only with the mutual consent of players and the board and I see full cooperation between them,” he said.—APP/AFP
