KARACHI, Oct 21: The Lyceum School made a strong bid to reach the semifinal of the Rev. Father Robert D’Silva Golden Jubilee Invitation Inter-School cricket tournament, registering their second successive victory after downing St. Peter’s High School by 146 runs at the National Bank Of Pakistan ground, Clifton on Monday.
Put into bat after losing the toss, The Lyceum batsmen took full advantage and ran up a score of 197 for six wickets in their 25 allotted overs through dashing knocks by Bilal Bhati (51), Ali Allah Wala (44) and Amir Motiwala (27).
Ijlal Ahmed was the pick of the St. Peter’s attack claiming three wickets for 24 runs. He was ably assisted by Amram Yousuf two for 32 and Mohammad Saad two for 36.
St. Peter’s chasing 198 for victory never really recovered after losing the openers with only three runs on the board and were dismissed for 51 runs in only 16.3 overs. Paceman Bilal Shabbir three for 11 and spinners Farhan Lakhani four wickets for four runs and Kashif Lakhani two for four caused the batting debacle.
In an earlier match played in the morning session, Beacon House scored a comfortable eight wicket win over St. Paul’s High School.
Having first use of the wicket, St. Paul’s could not take advantage of the fine batting display by opening bat Shaun Fernandes, who carried his bat with a splendid knock of 53 runs. Shelum Pervaiz (22) and Salman Bukhari (20), also made useful contributions to their team’s score.
The rest of the batting line-up flopped miserably as St. Paul’s could only muster 127 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 25 overs. Paceman Waqas Baghpati two for 18 and spinner Faisal Ahmed two for 27 bagged the wickets for the fielding side.
Beacon House reached the victory target of 132 after losing only two wickets with two overs to spare. Faisal Ahmed was unbeaten with 48 runs to his credit. Haider Ali chipped in with (32) and Umer Mehmood (22 n.o.).
With these defeats both St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s have been eliminated from the tournament.
On Tuesday, St. Michael’s Convent School take on Foundation Public School at 9.30 a.m. and Karachi Grammar School play the City School Darakshan at 1-30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the NBP ground.
