ISLAMABAD, Oct 20: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the general secretary of the Mutthida Majlis-i-Amal, said on Sunday that a government headed by the MMA would bring an end to the status quo and herald a change.

Talking to APP, Maulana Fazl said that elections were held to bring about a change both in governance and political culture. That objective, he emphasized, could best be served by allowing the MMA to head the government. Maulana Fazl, who is also chief of JUI, said that the MMA had nominated him as its candidate for prime minister’s office and the alliance was in touch with all political parties to garner support.

The MMA, he said, was a pro-federation political alliance that had gained marked electoral success in the NWFP and Balochistan by routing the nationalist forces.

In reply to a question, he dispelled the impression that the MMA was averse to America and the Western world, and said that the MMA was not opposed to these countries. “We want to maintain positive relations and friendship with all countries, including America and the Western world.”

The MMA, he said, wanted the basis of relationship of its government with the Western countries and America to be such that “we should feel ourselves an independent and sovereign nation”.

He said the MMA believed that there was no need of outside help for maintaining law and order in the country. The alliance was against the use of the country’s soil by anyone against another country. He said the MMA government would formulate a balanced foreign policy based on national consensus.—APP
