LONDON, Oct 20: A Robbie Keane double helped lift Tottenham Hotspur into third spot in the English Premiership League Sunday and left Bolton anchored to the bottom of the table.

Keane’s double and a late third from Simon Davies gave Glenn Hoddle’s side a 3-1 win at White Hart Lane and lifted them over Manchester United, Chelsea and Middlesbrough, who were beaten 1-0 by Charlton in the day’s other game.

Jason Euell’s 5th minute strike for Charlton was enough to win that match and lift the south London club out of the relegation zone.

Tottenham were thwarted in the first half by a combination of Bolton defending in numbers and their own failure to hit the target.

Keane should have put them ahead mid-way through the first period but he planted a free header wide after being picked out by Simon Davies.

But he made amends in the 58th minute after a move started by Goran Bunjevcevic.

The Yugoslav came out from defence down the left channel and played a delightful ball to Davies at the back of the box. He crossed first time and Keane pounced to sweep home his second goal in successive games.

The lead lasted just five minutes however. Kevin Nolan chipped the ball into the box and former France star Youri Djorkaeff got in behind Chris Perry and drilled his shot beyond Kasey Keller

Keane restored Tottenham’s lead in the 74th minute when he got on the end of Gus Poyet’s cross and Davies rounded off a great week with the third in the 90th minute.

Davies, who scored in Wales’ memorable win over Italy in midweek, took a pass from Teddy Sheringham and fired home from the edge of the area.

Charlton had started the day at the bottom of the table and with the unenviable record of having lost all of their games at The Valley.

Not surprisingly, they came out looking like a team with something to prove and it was no surprise when Euell got on the end of a Claus Jensen free-kick to head them into the lead.

Middlesbrough, whose recent form appeared to have deserted them, never looked like getting back into the match against a grimly determined Charlton side.

CELTIC THRASH HEARTS

EDINBURGH: Henrik Larsson scored twice as Celtic crushed Hearts 4-1 at Tynecastle Sunday to move one point behind Scottish premier league leaders Rangers.

English striker Chris Sutton and Stilian Petrov were also on target for the champions with all the Celtic goals coming before halftime.

Hearts scored a late consolation when Gary Wales headed home on 88 minutes.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill was delighted with the result especially since Glasgow rivals Rangers had maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-0 win against Motherwell on Saturday.

Celtic are second in the league with 28 points while Hearts stay fourth on 17.
