Desert Dream strides home

Published October 21, 2002

LAHORE, Oct 20: Fancied bay colt Desert Dream lived upto his star billing by scoring a brilliant success to lift the Gujrat Cup, the feature event of the Lahore Winter Meeting run over a mile at the Racecourse Sunday.

Ridden by ace-jockey M. Hanif, the 40 to 100 favourite Desert Dream trained by Mohammad Bashir took up the lead after the home stretch and hung on to defeat on-rushing dark-bay colt King Fisher by three-fourth of a length. Gelding Think Thank finished third, a distance away with The Champion, completing the frame.

A race later joint-favourite chestnut colt Son Of A Gun shot like a bullet in the last 100 metres to win the supporting event, the Gojra Plate, a class V event to his liking. He beat the neglected Great Grandy by about six lengths. The fancied colt Bureaucrat failed to endure the gruelling distance of a mile and finished third, half a length further behind with Blu’s Wendy fourth by one-and-a-half lengths.
