KARACHI, Oct 18: An undertrial prisoner died of alleged police torture on Friday.

The prisoner was brought from Landhi Jail to Civil Hospital where he died.

Yousuf Allana, aged 38, was admitted to Surgical Ward No 5 with injuries in the abdomen. Sources at the hospital said that policemen had kicked him on the abdomen due to which he had bled from the nose and mouth. The prison staff brought him to the hospital.

The prison authorities said that the prisoner was a drug addict, and he was arrested by the Gadap police for possession of drugs. He was keeping indifferent health. On Thursday his condition worsened, and he was shifted to the hospital.

The prisoner died at 1:30pm.

Police said that Yousuf was resident of Jan Kund Goth, Gadap, and father of 10 children.

ROAD ACCIDENTS: Reckless driving claimed two lives in the city on Friday.

A young man was run over by a minibus on Mauripur Road.

Police said that Noor Bakhsh, aged 35, was hit by a speeding minibus of route P-1. He was rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The bus driver sped off after the accident.

A 15-year-old boy died in a road accident in Pirabad.

Police said that Ibrahim died when he came under the wheels of a bus of route 1-D (JA-2316). He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The bus driver escaped.

SHOT DEAD: A young man was shot dead in Surjani Town on Friday.

Three men, Aijaz Ahmed, Fatah Mohammed and Ahmed Ali, riding on a motorcycle, (KAZ-4719) were going towards Hub.

Unidentified men signalled them to stop near a dry stormwater drain. As they tried to speed away, the unidentified men opened fire on them and disappeared.

A bullet hit Ahmed Ali in the head. He died on the spot.

Police said the victim was resident of sector 7-A in Surjani Town, and his family had left for Jhang on Thursday.

SUICIDE ATTEMPT: A foreign prisoner, Anthony, aged 36, attempted suicide in a jail at Gadani on Friday.

He has been admitted to JPMC.
