KARACHI, Oct 5: A large number of students thronged the Dow Medical College (DMC) to see their names in the provisional list of admissions to the first-year MBBS classes at the DMC and the Sindh Medical Colleges on Saturday.
The list was put on display in the wee hours on Saturday. In all, 193 candidates who had secured A-1 grade in the HSC examinations managed to get their names in the list, while the remaining 180 merit seats were shared by 168 A-graders, three B- graders and nine 9 A-levellers.
As many as 260 candidates had passed the intermediate exams with A-1 grades, but all of them could not perform well in the entrance test due to which they were placed at some later stage in the merit list, sources privy to the admission committee said.
A students of St Joseph’s College for Women, Sana Zia, who had secured second position in the consolidated merit list of pre-medical group topped the provisional admission list with a consolidated aggregate marks of 90.80 per cent. The cut-off mark in the case of DMC admissions was recorded at 81.56, while that for the SMC it remained 79pc.
However, a few of the candidates who visited the DMC on Saturday complained about certain miscalculation or expressed dissatisfaction over the marks awarded to them in the entrance test. The Bahria University, which had conducted the test this year, provided a carbonized copy of the answer scripts to the students.
When contacted, DMC principal and chairman of the selection centre at Karachi Prof Illahi Bakhsh M. Soomro said the feedback received from candidates on Saturday was very nominal.
However, those who are not satisfied with the assessment or grading could apply for a review on a complaint form available with the admission centre at the DMC, he added.
He said Oct 16 was the last date for submitting objection on the provisional merit list, while the final list would be put on display on Oct 23, after which candidates selected for admissions would be issued offer letters. Teaching will begin on Nov 1.
The top ten students in the merit list along with their consolidated marks are: Sana Zia (90.80 per cent), Bushra Aijaz (90.77), Faraz Ali Khan (90.36), Shireen Safdar (90.20), Sara Afzal (89.52), Erum Saleem Khan (89.31), Sumaira Shafi (88.96), Hina Ashraf (88.79), Sana Fatima (88.69) and Marium Hafeez (88.62).
