SUKKUR, Jan 31: Hundreds of people belonging to Chandio community, including women and children and carrying the bodies of three people who were killed in Sunday's police operation, blocked the National Highway from Ubauro to Chowk Mari for four hours on Monday.

Five people, including two officials of Kot Sabzal (Punjab) police, were killed in an exchange of fire between police and the residents of Nabi Bux Chandio village situated in the Sindh-Punjab border area during a raid for arrest of some suspects allegedly involved in heinous crimes. However, the villagers put up a resistance and opened fire on the raiding party, killing policemen Sarfaraz and Dawood.

Police also opened fire on the villagers resulting into the death of Shafiq Chandio, 14, Sharif Chandio, 30, and Ms Jannat, 40.

The protesters alleged that police had opened fire on innocent people and demanded registration of an FIR against the raiding party. They also demanded withdrawal of what they said a false case registered with the Kot Sabzal police station against some people belonging to their community.

Later, Sindh police officials negotiated with the protesters and assured them that the issue would be taken up at high level after which they lifted the blockade and took the bodies to their villages for burial.

An FIR has been registered against nine people on the charge of killing the policemen.

The bodies of slain policeman were sent to their village in Rahim Yar Khan for burial.
