KARACHI, Oct 4: Twenty-three vehicles — nine cars and 14 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Friday, police said.

Five cars were hijacked. Four others were stolen.

ACCIDENTS: A woman died two others were injured in a road accident in West Wharf on late Thursday night.

Police said that Naseem, aged 25, and her husband, Atiqur Rahman, were travelling in a rickshaw (BL-8722) when it collided with a speeding bus (JA-6282) of route 7-C near the ICI Bridge. The rickshaw overturned.

The woman, her husband and the rickshaw driver were injured.

They were rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced Naseem dead on arrival.

Police claimed to have arrested the bus driver, Sarfaraz, and impounded the bus.

An unidentified man died when he came under the wheels of a train near Cantt railway station on Friday.

The unidentified man, who was in his mid-30s, was run over by a train while walking across the railway tracks.

His body was sent to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre. After post-mortem the body has been kept in the Edhi’s morgue for identification, police said.

ROBBERIES: One theft and five robberies were committed in the city on Friday, police said.

Three female domestic servant stole jewellery worth Rs200,000 from a house in Block-4 of Gulistan-i-Jauhar. Three maids, Zainab, Fatima and Sumaiyya, were hired by the family three days ago. On Friday they stole jewellery worth around Rs200,000 and disappeared.

Akbar Ali lodged an FIR at Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station.

In Darkhshan, bandits robbed a man of Rs20,000. Police said that complainant Syed Abbas lodged an FIR at the area police station that armed men riding, on a motorcycle, robbed him of the cash he was carrying with him.

Ali Naseem lodged a complaint at Orangi Extension police station that three armed men looted Rs35,000 from him.

Zahid lodged a complaint at Ferozabad police station that three armed men barged into his house and got away with Rs100,000.

Mushtaq lodged an FIR at North Nazimabad police station that bandits robbed him of Rs40,000.

Qamar lodged an FIR at Model Colony police station that armed men deprived him of Rs14,000.

ENCOUNTERS: In September 43 police encounters took place in the city in which 16 suspects were killed and 63 arrested. Seven policemen also lost their lives and 14 others were injured, said a statement issued by the SSP Investigation on Friday, adds APP.

It was stated that 172 accused were arrested in September. Nine accused, in hiding for the past nine years, were also arrested.

Since Feb 1 this year after the investigation of the 2,532 registered cases, 1,710 accused were arrested and their challans were submitted in courts.
