PESHAWAR, Nov 12: The anti-smuggling squad of the Customs Collectorate, Peshawar, seized a large quantity of smuggled goods worth Rs6.67 million from different parts of the NWFP during the last few days.

The goods seized from different places on the Grand Trunk Road from Peshawar to Islamabad and at Bannu and Sust (near Gilgit), included cloth, clothes, black tea, electric appliances, blankets, etc.

In all, a total of 22 cases of seizures had been made from Nov 2 to Nov 11, last - a majority of which were made by the anti-smuggling squad at Kund, according to an official press release issued by the Customs Collectorate, Peshawar.

The confiscated goods, according to the press release, also included a Pajero jeep valuing Rs1.5 million, found to be non-duty paid after carrying out forensic tests. A major consignment, involving smuggled goods valuing Rs2.7 million, were seized from Sust, near Gilgit.

Apart from the above-mentioned cases, the customs authorities also foiled an attempt of deceiving the authorities for claiming rebate over and above the prescribed value of the goods that were being exported from Peshawar.

A customs clearance agent had booked a consignment for abroad, showing total value of the consignment at $66,240. However, upon verification of the consignment it was found to be of the value of $27,470.

A total loss of Rs358,952 would have been caused to the national exchequer given the customs authorities did not confiscate the consignment.

The customs clearance agent, said the press release, had projected the value of the consignment deceptively at higher side to lay claim to a larger amount of rebate.
