ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: A group of observers of the Commonwealth will arrive here on Sunday to monitor the October general election.
The former deputy prime minister of Malaysia, Dato Tan Sri Musa bin Hitam, has been appointed head of the observers’ group, comprising 22 members from 18 countries, by the Commonwealth secretariat in London, a Commonwealth announcement has said.
The group has been constituted in response to invitations from the government and the election commission and with the support of the main political parties in the country.
The statement says: “It is charged with determining in its own judgment whether the conditions exist for a free expression of will by the electors and if the results of the elections reflect the wishes of the people.”
