LAHORE, Nov 11: The fancied bay gelding One Man Show registered a heart-warming win in the feature event of the 10th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday. This sixth and last race of the afternoon was run over seven furlongs.

The front-runner bay horse Half Love ran out of stamina after going over six furlongs and had to be content with the second spot, six-and-a-halflengths behind One Man Show. Anotherbay horse Admiral’s Way, carrying a heavy impost of 10 stone 3 Ibs, ran a fine race and finished third, beaten by Half Love only by a short-head. Hard Press finished fourth, three-fourth ofa length further back.

One Man Show has the reputation of always going well at start of a race. However, on Sunday, he was able to pick up his way on the outside of Half Love to snatch lead from him and win by a comfortable margin. The victory was so convincing that it looked to be a “one-horse show”. The winner clocked one minute 27 1/5 seconds over the distance. In all, 13 ran for the feature event after the last-minute withdrawal of the bay colt Crown Maker. This three-year-old colt was considered a “challenger” to the gelding One Man Show but Crown Maker’s owner, inexplicably, withdrew him from the race.

This last race of the day, was considerably delayed because the owner of Admiral’s Way did not look interested in running him and finally put forward the “excuse” that his horse wasnot fit to compete. However, the stewards did not consider hislast excuse as valid and did not allow the last-minute withdrawal of Admiral’s Way. The horse finished a good third,belyinghis owner’s assertion!

A race earlier, the bay gelding Think Thank, sprinted home determinedly, to claim the supporting event. Think Thank outpaced front-runner roan mare Dilnasheen II to win by half-a-length in the well-contested fifth race of the afternoon. Think Thank made a sweeping move in the last 100 metres of the seven-furlong race to hit the front and win by a narrow margin ofhalf-a-length. Thebaycolt Sarfrosh and the bay filly Shattarymade upthe frame among nine runners.

The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards cancelled the second race in which a 30 to 100 favourite Faheem Choice had won. After the race was over, a group of punters demanded the cancellation of the race, because in their view none of the contestants other than the winner “had been sent in to perform on merit”! The stewards accepted the genuineness of the punters’claim and announced cancellation ofthe race forwantofa true competition.

With the exception of the first event, the remaining four races were won by the fancied animals. In the opener, the 30to 100 favourite Qaswa Queen and the 4 to 1 long-shot Flame, both trainedby Haji Fazal Hadi, were backed.
