KARACHI, Sept 26: The Karachi University Teachers Society on Thursday resolved that teachers would boycott the proceedings of the varsity academic council on September 30 in order to press their demands.

A general body meeting of the society was held at the Arts Lobby of the university, with Dr Riaz Ahmad in the chair. The body decided that teachers on the campus would wear black arm-bands till Sept 30, and would not attend the academic council meeting on the day, since it was scheduled to be held with the sitting vice-chancellor in the chair.

Speakers at the meeting said that the main demands of the protesting teachers, including the removal of the vice-chancellor and institution of a judicial inquiry into alleged illegal actions by the varsity administration, were still to be accepted. The General Secretary of KUTS, Sarwar Nasim, Dr Abdul Qadeer, Majid Mumtaz, Nasir Khan and Raees Ahmad spoke at the meeting.

In order to express solidarity with the Federation of Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations, KUTS also announced to boycott classes on Oct 4 after 10am and to gather for a rally, which would leave for D J Science College later in the day.

KUTS also demanded the withdrawal of the task force on higher education reforms and Model University Ordinance. The meeting warned the higher authorities that they should initiate actions to save the varsity atmosphere from further deterioration.
