KARACHI: Seminar on ultrasound

Published November 12, 2001

KARACHI, Nov 11: A three-day seminar on “Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology” organized by Sobhraj Maternity Home started on Sunday to impart basic training to the post-graduate doctors about reading and understanding of the ultrasound scan.

On the first day a practical demonstration of ultrasound reading and techniques was observed in which about 48 doctors from Sobhraj, Civil and PNS Shifa hospitals participated.

Dr Mussarrat told the participants that there should at least be three ultrasound scans during pregnancy and the best period for the purpose is around 18 to 22 weeks.

He said cervical incompetence may lead to repeated miscarriage. It should be properly evaluated with empty bladder preferably with a labial or endo vaginal ultrasound scan.

Similarly, it is not necessary to fill up bladder before carrying ultrasound. According to him ultrasound could be repeatedly done as and whenever required as it was found not having harmful effects on development of the foetus, he added.

Medical superintended of the Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, Dr Shabin Naz, said due to lack of knowledge doctors were forced to seek help from operators of the equipment and specialists.

The training would help them keep acquaintance with the latest developments taking place in the ultrasound techniques.

On Monday ultrasound diagnosis regarding infertility in male and females would be discussed.—PPI
