Army continue winning spree

LAHORE, Sept 20: Defending champions Army continued their winning spree on the second day of the 44th National championship by grabbing six more gold medals at the Model Town Club pool Friday..

On the second day running Army won six finals out of seven events to take their medals tally to 12 gold, eight silver and five bronze medals with total of 149 points on the table.

Saturdfay is the last day with seven more finals to be decided.

Zulifqar Ali Senior of Army who won two gold medals Thursday, not only bagged another two gold medals on the second day, but also improved his own record in the 50m butterfly, clocking 27.36 seconds.  He bettered  his own record of 27.46 seconds he set in June 2001  in Lahore.  Earlier, in the first race of the day, Zulfiqar Sr grabbed a gold in the 200m individual medley clocking 2m. 25.65secs.

Nasir Mehmood in the 100 metres breaststroke, Mehboob in the 400 metres freestyle and Muhammad Fiaz in the 50 metres freestyle won the other gold medals in the individual events for Army. Army also clocked 4m.31secs to  win  4x100 metres medley relay which was the last event of the day.

The most interesting feature of the day was the 50m freestyle in which two swimmers were jointly placed in second while the third position was also equally shared by two swimmers.

Muhammad Fiaz of Army won the gold with a time of 26.17 seconds.

Sikandar Khan (Punjab) and Muhammad Anwar (Army) timed 26.80 seconds to be bracketed for the  second spot, while Muhammad Zahid (Navy) and Abbas Dhanji (Wapda) also  covered the distance with 27.26 seconds to claim third position jointly.

100M BACKSTROKE: Muhammad Zahid (Navy) 1m.7.36 sec, Nisar Ahmed (Army), M Taz (Army).

100M BREASTSTROKE: Nasir Mehmood (Army) 1m 14.75 secs, Munir Hussain (Army), Naseer Ahmed (Wapda).

400M FREESTYLE: Mehboob (Army) 4m 36.24 sec, Munawar Luqman (Wapda), Muhammad Khan (Army).

50M BUTTERFLY: Zulifqar Ali Senior (Army) 27.36 sec (NEW RECORD), Faraz Samad (Wapda), A Gul (Navy).

50M FREESTYLE: M Faiz (Army) 26.17 sec, Sikandar Khan (Punjab) and Muhammad Anwar (Army) joint second, Muhammad Zahid (Navy), Abbas Dhanji (Wapda) joint third.

4X100M MEDLEY RELAY: Army 4m 31 sec, Navy, Wapda.
