DHAKA, Sept 18: More than 200 people of all age groups have been arrested in Sirajganj, a north-western district of Bangladesh, since Tuesday after a riverside police camp was attacked and four policemen killed.

According to witnesses, some 30 outlaws, equipped with automatic weapons, attacked the Randhunibari police camp, situated on the bank of the river Jamuna, at about 5:30pm on Tuesday.

At the time, six constables were resting inside the camp established under Belkuchi Thana. One was on guard.

The attackers opened fire on the policemen, wounding five; four died on way to hospital. The attackers fled in their boats.

The Deputy Commissioner Sirajganj told newsmen that the outlaws took with them 12 rifles and 300 rounds of bullets. This was the third attack on police stations in less then three years.

Six platoons of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) have been deployed in the area to assist the police.
