NHMP holds road safety drive

TAXILA, Oct 31: The National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) performed a road safety public awareness general hold-up on Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1).

A briefing campaign was conducted by Dr Mohammad Shafique, DIG Motorways, and SSP Mohammad Tahir Khan, sector commander M-1. During the hold-up, all police mobiles were on road to ensure effective road education. During the drive, 3,100 drivers were briefed at Sector M-1 alone. Road safety literature was also distributed amongst commuters while children were handed over sweet candy packets on the occasion.

The campaign aimed to show efforts towards promoting public-friendly police culture in the region.—Correspondent

Flood-affected to be facilitated ISLAMABAD, Oct 31: The Rural Development Foundation of Pakistan (RDFP) has entered into an understanding with US-based Peace Builders to facilitate the flood-affected people of rural areas.

The US-based body would assist the RDFP in provision of pre-fabricated infrastructure for shelter, education and healthcare services.

RDFP Chairman Irshadullah Khan said in the first phase of this initiative, Peace Builders would establish a model infrastructure at RDFP Centre in Islamabad.

Simultaneously, another structure would also be set up at Agra Payan, a devastated village in Charsadda district, he added. He said further replication of these models throughout the country would follow depending on the success and performance of the pilot projects. —Staff Reporter

Head of GBTI resigns

ATTOCK, Oct 31: The chief executive officer (CEO) of Ghazi Barotha Tarqiati Idara (GBTI) has resigned due to differences with local directors over administrative and budgetary issues, it has been learnt.

Chairman GBTI Shoaib Sultan Khan has accepted the resignation of Ahsan Khan, sources said. Malik Fateh Khan, general manager National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), has been temporarily given additional charge of heading the institute.

Appointed in August 2008, the outgoing CEO had approved the policy to eliminate field offices to reduce expenditures, a move that irked local directors, sources said. When contacted, Mr Khan said he had presented his resignation four months back in July, which has been accepted now.—Correspondent

Man gunned down in Rawalakot

MUZAFFARABAD, Oct 31: A man was killed and another one was injured after being sprayed with bullets on the outskirts of Rawalakot on Sunday evening, witnesses said.

Gulfraz was sitting at the shop of Pervez in Khaigalla bazaar, 10 kilometres away from Rawalakot, when he was fired upon from a vehicle which drove past the shop.

Gulfraz sustained half a dozen bullets and died on the spot whereas Pervez received a bullet in his leg and was referred to Rawalpindi.

The deceased had been working abroad and was about to return to his work. Immediately, the cause of murder was not known and police have started investigations.—Staff Correspondent

Teachers training concludes

ISLAMABAD, Oct 31: The Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) organised a five-day science teachers training in collaboration with the French embassy.

Teachers from institutions under the Federal Directorate of Education and private schools participated in the training programme.

It was one of the unique training programmes initiated by the Science Foundation. The teachers were trained on the use of scientific instruments and other skills.—Online

Use gas judiciously

RAWALPINDI, Oct 31: The Oil and Gas Development Corporation (OGDC), in order to supply gas without suspension, has urged the public to utilise gas judiciously in the winter.

The corporation said the consumers should follow its guidelines and fix programme timers in their geysers. In this way, they not only could save 80 per cent gas but would also reduce their utility bills.

The saved gas can be used for CNG purposes and for other industrial needs.—Online
