TOKYO, Sept 16: Former world number one Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Maja Matevzic of Slovenia in the first round of the $585,000 Princess Cup Monday.
The Spaniard, who headed the WTA rankings in early 1995, took a little under an hour to get past her unseeded opponent as she dictated the match from the baseline under a closed roof at Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo.
In other first-round matches, Austrian Patricia Wartusch overcame Japanese wild card Saori Obata 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 while American Amy Frazier ousted Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
