Vaqas grabs early lead

LAHORE, Sept 13: Vaqas Ahmed (Rawalpindi) fired two-under-par 70 to emerge as the first day leader of both the net and gross events of the 19th Governor’s Punjab amateur golf tournament which teed off at the Lahore Gymkhana course Thursday.

The main trophy will be awarded to best net scorer.

Zero handicapper Vaqas earned six birdies, four at the front nine and two at the back nine besides registering four bogeys one at the inner way and the remaining three at the outer way. Vaqas completed the first nine holes excellently with three under-34 and the back nine holes at one over-36.

At second position two contenders were joint with a net score of one-under-par-71. They are Brig. Anwarul Haq of Garrison (nine handicapper) and Shoaib Bokhari of Lahore Gymkhana (six handicapper).

At 72, three more competitors were bracketed for the third spot. Among them are Lt. Col.Asif Mehdi of Sargodha (four handicapper), Mohsin Anwar of Lahore Gymkhana (seven handicapper) and Daniyal Jehangir also of Gymkhana (nine handicapper).

Similarly, three players are competing at fourth position with the score of one-over-par-73. They are all from Lahore Gymkhana. Among them are, Omer Tiwana (three handicapper), Shakeel Ahmed (seven handicapper) and Dr Haroon Ihsan (nine handicapper).

In the gross section, Vaqas was also the leader.

Vaqas was being chased by a talented golfer Shahid Javed Khan who could not produce a good card. Javed posted a card of two-over-par-74 (39+35).

Three strokes behind, Tariq Mehmood (Islamabad) was at the third position. Net: 70-Vaqas Ahmed (0). 71-Brig. Anwarul Haq (9), Shoaib Bokhari (6). 72- Lt. Col.Asif Mehdi (4), Mohsin Anwar (7), Daniyal Jehangir (9). 73- Omer Tiwana (3), Shakeel Ahmed (7), Dr Haroon Ihsan (9). Gross. 70- Vaqas Ahmad 34+36. 74- Shahid Javed Khan (39+35). 77- Tariq Mehmood (39+38).
