KARACHI, Sept 13: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro laid the foundation stone of a single-section high school at Baloch Goth, Orangi Town on Thursday. The high school is being built by the city government at a cost of Rs6.5 million. The construction of the building would be completed in a year.

The governor said that the government has undertaken development projects at a large scale in remote and backward areas, instead of concentrating on upscale areas only.

Soomro, who was accompanied by City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, DCO Shafiqur Rahman Paracha, Nazim Orangi Town Shahid Alam and other officials, visited various streets of the village and mixed him with local people. He also visited the house of Sardar Khan Magsi, a notable of the village.

The governor inquired about the villagers problems, and issued on the spot directives.

Addressing a ceremony, Soomro said that the government attaches top priority to education, as it was an essential element for the development of society. In this respect, he added, the government is providing more opportunities to backward areas to bring them up to par with the developed areas.

Sindh is the first province where primary education has been made compulsory, and where girl students from class five to eight are being given stipends. About 0.3 million girl students could benefit from this scheme annually, he said, adding that school children in public sector schools were also provided with free textbooks and uniforms.

Talking about resource allocation, the governor said that resource distribution is being made in such a way that each tier of the local government gets its due share, and added that the provincial finance commission award in this respect has already been announced.
