KARACHI, Sept 7: The ongoing confrontation between the administration and the teachers, students and non-teaching staff took an ugly turn on Saturday when rangers baton-charged the protesting faculty and students.
As a result of an early day baton charge and incidents of stone-pelting, mainly in the arts faculty and within the administration block of the university, at least three dozen teachers and students received injuries while teaching activities remained suspended throughout the day for a second day.
In their bid to enter the administration block and see the vice-chancellor, the enraged group of teachers, students and non-teaching staff, damaged property, office equipment and the official car of the vice-chancellor, said an eyewitness.
Neither the vice-chancellor nor the registrar of the university was available in their offices, so the rangers dealt with the students and teachers on their own.
The protestors also staged a sit-in for at least three hours within the administration block. As no response was forthcoming from any side, they ultimately marched up to the Silver Jubilee gate of the university, where the traffic was disrupted briefly.
In the meantime, the students and teachers announced to reassemble on Monday to decide the future line of action.
