LONDON, Sept 6: Five-wicket Harbhajan Singh inspired India’s spirited fightback on the second day of the fourth Test Friday as England, failing to fully capitalise on Michael Vaughan’s 195, were dismissed for 515.
India, after a bright start, opted for a defensive approach for the final hour as they closed on 66 for one, with Sanjay Bangar on 17 and Rahul Dravid 31 not out.
Virender Sehwag, softened up by Andrew Caddick when he was struck in the ribs while fielding at short leg, fell when he chased a wide ball from Caddick and was caught at second slip for 12.
It was, however, India’s day, reviving their hopes of a first Test series win outside the sub-continent since 1986, after England had amassed a commanding 336 for two Thursday.
Off-spinner Harbhajan’s five for 115 from 38.4 overs helped the touring side cut through England’s middle order, with John Crawley, Nasser Hussain and Alec Stewart all failing before all-rounder Dominic Cork shored up the innings with a half-century.
With England suddenly vulnerable on 372 for five as three wickets tumbled for 36 early Friday, Cork produced a cameo 52, punctuated with deft flicks behind square and cracking cover drives off both front and back foot, to ensure a challenging if not decisive first-innings total.
Some late hitting from tail-enders Ashley Giles (31) and Caddick (14 not out) pushed the home side past the 500 mark.
Earlier, Vaughan missed out on his first test double century for the second time in three matches when he played at a slanting ball from left-arm pace bowler Zaheer Khan to get the faintest of touches through to wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra.
While he was supported with half-centuries from fellow opener Marcus Trescothick (57), Mark Butcher (54) and Cork, England would have hoped to score more than 600 in their first innings to bat India out of the game.
After the encouraging start, however, they lost three wickets for 36 to look vulnerable on 372 for five. Stewart and Cork put on 62 for the sixth wicket but England’s last five wickets still fell for 81 runs.
Vaughan had resumed on 182 smashed the first ball of the day from Agarkar through the covers for his 28th boundary. He hit another four to race to 190 and straight drove Agarkar for three to move to 195.
The Yorkshire opener, who made 100 in the first test before making 197 in the second, faced just 13 balls on Friday, becoming the first man to be dismissed twice in the 190s in the same series. He has scored 568 runs against India this series, averaging 94.66.
Harbhajan, who snatched his ninth five-wicket bag and third against England, was ably supported by all-rounder Bangar who grabbed two for 48 off 24 overs.
