KARACHI, Sept 6: Seventeen vehicles — four cars and 13 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Friday, police said.
The cars were stolen.
Four motorcycles were hijacked. Nine others were stolen.
Police also claimed on Friday to have recovered three cars and six motorcycles.
STRANGLED: A woman was strangled in her house in Mochko on Friday morning.
Three guests, including a relation, identified as Ajaz, came to Mohammed Adil’s house in Naval Colony. As they were sitting in the drawing room, Adil’s mother, Safia, aged 55, asked the guests whether they had taken breakfast, police said. They replied in the negative, and Safia asked Adil to bring breakfast for the guests.
Adil, accompanied by a guest, Ashiq, went out of the room to bring breakfast. In the meantime, the two other guests, Qubool and Ajaz, strangled Safia with a rope.
As they were collecting jewellery and other valuables, Adil returned to the room. Qubool and Ajaz tried to strangle Adil also. However, he raised alarm, which caught the attention of neighbours, who informed police.
Neighbours caught one of the suspects, Qubool, and gave him a severe beating. Police arrested the suspect.
Safia’s body was sent to Civil Hospital for post-mortem.
A case against the three suspects was lodged at Mochko police station.
Police suspected family feud to be a possible motive for the killing.
ACCIDENT: A young man died in a road accident in Landhi on Friday.
Police said that Mohammed Altaf, aged 22, resident of Labour Colony, was run over by a speeding passenger coach (PE-6185) while walking across the main road. He was rushed to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The coach driver escaped after the accident.
ROBBERIES: Three robberies were committed in the city on Friday, police said.
Unidentified men robbed Mohammed Razi of Rs26,112 at gunpoint in the police limits of Aziz Bhatti.
Mohammed Hafiz lodged an FIR at Orangi Town police station that four armed men looted cash and valuables from him.
Ghufran Khan lodged an FIR at the area police station that four armed men barged into his house in North Nazimabad and got away with valuables.
SHOOTOUT: Police arrested a suspect after a shootout with suspects on Sharea Faisal on Friday.
A police party signalled a suspicious-looking car (ABB-678) to stop. The suspects tried to flee by firing at police, who returned the fire and chased the car.
The car was intercepted near Nursery. Police arrested one of the suspects, identified as Abdul Waheed.
The other suspect, identified as Shafeeq, escaped.
Police recovered two pistols, a dagger and several registration number plates of vehicles.
The car (ABB-678), in which the suspects were travelling, was hijacked in Darkhshan police limits on July 11.
ARMS RECOVERED: During a snap check at Mochko police post on Friday, police recovered a hand-grenade and two pistols from the possession of two suspects.
Police recovered the arms and ammunition from the possession of two passengers, identified as Mohammed Azam and Mohammed Rafiq. They were coming from Panjgur on a passenger coach (QAJ-9592), police said.
Police were investigating the matter and looking for their third accomplice who had boarded another bus for Karachi.
DIES: A young man was found dead in Surjani Town on Friday.
Police said that Mohammad Saleem, aged 35, was found dead near a bus stand in Surjani Town. He had been a heroin addict for the past 5-6 years. Formerly, he worked as a bus conductor.
The body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem.
Sources at the hospital said that the post-mortem report had been reserved till the receipt of the histopathological report.
