ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: Central Board of Revenue on the intervention of federal tax ombudsman provided relief to a poor widow by writing-off income tax arrears amounting to Rs520,603.

Naziran Begum, a resident of Jhang, who had lost her husband, informed the FTO that the Income Tax Department was demanding payment of income tax arrears.

She indicated that she was poor and had many children to support with no source of income. Thus she was not in a position to pay the income tax arrears outstanding against her late husband and requested that they be waived.

The FTO decided that the CBR should write-off the arrears of widow’s late husband and report compliance on priority basis.

The CBR reported that the complainant‘s husband had a business under the name Yasrab Enterprises and the outstanding arrears amounted to Rs520,603.

Considering that recovery was not possible a proposal to write-off the tax demand was under process with the Arrears Write-off Committee and the regional commissioner concerned had directed to write-off the demand at the earliest. In compliance with the directive of the FTO, the RCIT Central Region Multan reported that the arrears had been written- off.
