DHAKA, Sept 4: Professor Yazuddin Ahmed, the Vice Chancellor of the private sector State University of Bangladesh and a former teacher of the Dhaka University, is poised to become the 14th President of Bangladesh unopposed.
Prof. Ahmed has filed his nomination for the presidency with the Election Commission on Wednesday. He is the candidate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led coalition that took over power in October last year. The members of the 300-strong Jatiya Sangsad (national Parliament) are schedule to elect the President on September 16.
The main opposition in Parliament, Awami League, which has only 58 MPs the House, did not field any candidate for the presidential polls scheduled for Sept 16.The BNP-led four-party alliance commands over two-thirds plus majority in the House.
The BNP’s standing committee, the party’s highest policy-making body, finalised Professor Ahmed’s nomination last night.
