Campaign for tree plantation launched

LAKKI MARWAT, Sept 1: District Nazim Humayun Saifullah Khan has said that forests effectively controlled environmental pollution.

He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Monsoon tree plantation campaign in Lakki Marwat on Sunday.

He called upon the people to supplement efforts of the forest department for maximum forestation in the district.

The function was also attended by Brig Habibur Reham, director-general health services, NWFP, DCO Syed Israr Shah, EDO Works, Forest Department officials, and a large number of people.

The district forest officer said that trees would be planted over 50-kilometre area along the main road and canals, and 608 acres in the district by the participation of community organizations.

District Nazim appreciated the forest department and assured his cooperation. Prior to their speeches, the District Nazim and DG Health formally planted saplings of pine to inaugurate the campaign.

BRIDGE COLLAPSES: The bridge over Chunai water course, linking villages in the lower parts of Lakki Marwat with the Indus Highway collapsed due to heavy rains.

The bridge measuring 30 feet caved in just after a passenger bus crossed it, sources said, adding that traffic on both sides of the bridge remained blocked.

TWO ARRESTED: The police arrested two accused, involved in firing at an electricity cable in village Wanda Kalan, some eight kilometres from here.
