SUKKUR, Aug 27: At least 20 office bearers of the Upper Sindh Irrigation Employees Union, All Pakistan Clerks Association, General Irrigation Employees Union, and Sub-engineers Irrigation Association observed an eight-hour token hunger strike in the Irrigation Colony, Guddu, against the sacking of 256 employees.
They raised slogans against the Irrigation Department.
They demanded that the employees be reinstated immediately.
Meanwhile, at least 250 employees of the irrigation department, Guddu Region, have been sacked, while 400 employees have not been paid their salaries for the month of July as yet.
The irrigation department employees have been feeling extremely depressed as a result of this.
The secretary of the Upper Sindh Irrigation Employees Union said the families of the 400 employees were on the brink of starvation.
He demanded the immediate disbursement of salaries to all the employees, otherwise the union would hold a strong protest.
He demanded that the causes for the delay in the payment of salary should be probed and disciplinary action should be taken against the officials responsible.
14 RELEASED: The Bhong police (Punjab) released 14 people from the lock up of its police station on the intervention of Saleem Jan Mazari and other influential people of Punjab.
The head constable of the Bhong police station, Mohammad Arif, told this correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday that the majority of the arrested people had been released.
He said that the officials of the Shahwali police station and Bungalow Achcha police station raided Sindh near Guddu about three or four days ago to arrest some criminals who were hiding there.
PACKAGE: A special rehabilitation package for deserving people has been announced under the government policy to alleviate poverty from the society.
Under the scheme, financial assistance will be provided to people from the Zakat fund, ranging from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000.
For this purpose, the chairman, District Zakat and Ushr Committee, Sukkur, has advised the Mustehqeen to send their applications to the chairman of the Local Zakat Committee in their respective areas.
GRAVEYARDS: A delegation of the Tahfuz-i- Qabrestan Committee, Sukkur, called on District Naib Nazim Iqbal Dawood at his office here on Tuesday.
Dawood gave away a cheque amounting to Rs600,000 to Ghaffar to for the construction of boundary wall of graveyards.
