KARACHI, Aug 25: Fine double by leading owner Faisal Farooq stable highlighted the Karachi Summer Gymkhana races held here Sunday at the local turf.
Hiawatha, a three-year old colt recorded an impressive win in the third race while Navahoo Princess, showing improvement simply outpaced Trillionairess whose rider, Ghulam Shabbir tried questionable tactics by boring the youngster all through to the home stretch. Zahid Faiz rode well keeping his cool to complete his double. Both mounts from Faisal Farooq’s stable were sent out by trained Manzoor Baran.
In this race, Cleopatra who was heavily backed by the connections returned to the unsaddling enclosure bleeding from the nostrils and had a sharp cut on the forehand as she hurt herself in the starting gate as she was frenetic. The rider of The Cleopatra, Shahzad requested for withdrawal of her charge but his request was turned down by the Stewards without the mare being checked by the Vet. It was nothing short of cruelty to the animal.
Another runner which made an impressive debut at the local turf was Syed Taufiq Kamal’s Lippizzaner, a three-year old, thorough bred colt, out of Strides by Strides - Sweet Desire. He showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals. Love U Lady who was reported to be tracking very well in the morning exercises finished second some five length away from the winner. In fact, her rider, Ghulam Shabbir, favourite of the people in the glass house just tested his mount without really pressing her. It was not her true run. She will prove a much better horse when she will have the blessings of the connections.
Noor-un-Nisa who was favoured by the handicapper by giving her an eight pound allowance just on one run out of frame and indicated in these columns was backed with confidence by the connections and obliged them. It was in fact a slap in the face of the handicapper who will be well advised not to play with the rules of the game and follow the basics of handicapping in a copybook manner.
