LAHORE, Aug 23: Submission of nomination papers finally picked up on Friday when some 64 nominations were filed before the returning officers (ROs).

Independent candidates constituted the largest proportion of 29. Some 10 candidates of the PPPP, five each of PML(QA) and Mutahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), four of Pakistan Awami Tehreek(PAT), three of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf(PTI), two of PML(N) and one candidate of PPP-Shaheed Bhutto Group submitted the papers.

Of the 64 nominations, 19 papers were filed for NA and rest for provincial assembly seats.

PPPP leader Jehangir Badar, PAT-Inqalab Group Leader Aftab Ahmad Khan Lodhi and independent candidate Mian Rafi Khawar filed papers for both the NA and PA seats.

Leading politicians who filed their papers on Friday included PPPP leaders Jehangir Badar, Qasim Zia, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Haji Azizur Rehman Chan, PML(QA) leader Chaudhry Akhtar Rasool and MMA leader Liaquat Baloch. Former Lahore Naib Nazim Farooq Amjad Mir also submitted his papers.

They appeared in person to submit their papers with the exception of Jehangir Badar whose son filed the papers on behalf of his father. Badar arrested by NAB on corruption charges is in jail these days.

Scores of people purchased nomination papers on Friday as. Saturday (today) is the last day for filing nominations would be received by the city’s 13 ROs till 12 midnight.
