HYDERABAD, Aug 23: Eight candidates of various political parties including the Muttahida Quami Movement, the PPP Parliamentarians, and the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal have filed their nomination papers with the returning officers concerned on Friday.
The rest of the candidates will file their papers on Saturday till 12pm as per the election schedule.
Prof Khalid Wahab, an academician, filed his nomination papers before the returning officer for NA-219 (Hyderabad-II), Qazi Allah Bux, Sixth Additional District & Sessions Judge.
Prof Wahab recently joined the MQM after he was offered a ticket by the party.
“I agree with the policies of the MQM, especially when it talks about provincial autonomy,” Prof Wahab, who is also a human rights activist, told newsmen in the court.
Another MQM diehard, Farooque Qureshi, filed nomination for PS-49 before the same returning officer.
The MQM has not finalized the other names for two provincial assembly seats of Hyderabad city that have always been bagged by it. Different names were under consideration.
Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal candidates Sahibzada Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair and Abdul Rehman Rajput, who were in fact Jamiat-i-Ulmae-i-Pakistan (JUP) leaders, filed their papers respectively for NA-220 (Hyderabad-III) and PS-46 before Returning Officer Amjad Ali Bohyo.
Ms Shamim Akhtar, an independent candidate, filed her candidature for PS-48.
PPP’s Abdul Hakeem Memon filed for PS-53-54 of Tando Mohammad Khan Taluka.
Ms Huma Talpur of the PML-Q and an independent candidate, Mir Ghulam Akbar, filed their nomination papers for PS-50.
Arab Kaka obtained form on behalf of Makhdoom Amin Faheem, the chief of PPP Parliamentarians for NA-218 (Hyderabad-I), the family seat of the Makhdoom family, and for PS-43 as Makhdoom would also contest on the said provincial seat. He would submit his candidature on Saturday.
Incumbent Hyderabad Taluka Nazim Peer Amjad Shah Jillani of the PPP also obtained a nomination form for PS-50, while Shahbuddin Shah Hussaini for PS-48.
ATC: The Anti-Terrorism Court, Hyderabad, on Friday recorded the statement of former SHO Matiari police station Hussain Nawaz Dal in a police encounter case that led to the death of Sub-inspector Ghulam Mustafa Qureshi and ASI Nasir Abbas Shah in March last year.
Mr Dal told the court how the encounter began and how the policemen were killed.
He informed that the bodies had been sent to the Civil Hospital, while the injured too had been shifted there.
The court has so far recorded the statements of SIP Azam Mirza, ASI Zafar Dal, Constable Tariq, a doctor, and a Tapedar.
Four accused of the case — Jalal, Rahib, Sahab, and Mohammad Juman Chuttho — were in police custody.
Defence Counsel Allah Bachayo Soomro has disputed the prosecution version.
The prosecution witnesses supported the FIR.
The defence counsel confronted prosecution witnesses with their 161 Cr PC statements.
He told the ASI that he and SHO Hussain Bux Dal were not present at the time of the police encounter. He wondered as to how the ASI claimed to be an eyewitness when he did not see the encounter.
