KARACHI, Aug 23: The city Nazim — on the second day of the city government’s cleanliness campaign — witnessed the process of garbage lifting by riding a garbage lifting tricycle during a visit to Gulberg Town.

Naimatullah Khan visited Gulberg and Liaquatabad towns on Friday to witness the pace of progress of the campaign, and directed the concerned town Nazimeen to ensure that Karachi becomes a clean city at the earliest.

Khan was briefed about the garbage lifting programme of UC Ancholi in Gulberg Town, where hired garbage men collect garbage on tricycles given by the UC, and dispose of the waste at given points so that it does not get spread over by scavengers.

UC Nazim Sajjad Dara briefed him and said that the UC is running the programme successfully, at a break even point, and hoped to make it profitable soon as the facility is expanded.

Both the city Nazim and the town Nazim Farooq Naimatullah rode a tricycle which was parked in Gulberg Park.

Khan emphasized the importance of cleanliness and of the beautification campaign launched by the city government, and said that cent per cent lighting will be completed in all city limits within two months.

He visited newly developed parks in the town, including Mehmood Shaheed Park, the Women’s Park and the 9000 sq feet Saman Park which will be developed and opened to the public in two months.

Gulberg town has become the first town to install four clocks at a roundabout — Ayesha Manzil — and Khan was shown where these clocks have been installed, while Farooq Naimatullah briefed him. Farooq said that they will remove all garbage collections points from the main roads, and that the walls of all city/town buildings facing main roads will be whitewashed.

The city Nazim was shown the pace of work at the main road leading from Karimabad to Ziauddin Hospital, which was in a horrible condition.

Later on, Khan visited Liaquatabad Town and saw the conditions of Nazimabad No 1, Ibne Sina Road, the area around Sir Syed Girls College and other inner localities of the town, and directed the town administration to develop parks and playgrounds in the areas.

GULSHAN TOWN: During the ongoing cleanliness campaign, Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town has lifted at least 356 tons of garbage/debris.

Nazim Gulshan Town Abdul Wahab and Town Municipal Officer Matanat Ali Khan supervised the campaign at Karsaz Road, Amir Khusro Road, Ghazi Salahuddin Road, Najaf Ground and Kokin Society.

In UC-1, Nazim Junaid Makati, Naib Nazim Aamir Rafi and Solid Waste Management Officer Nafis Khan supervised cleanliness work, where the lifters of the health department continued the lifting of garbage and debris till 11:00 pm.

Some 80 tons of garbage was lifted from UC-1 and 60 tons from UC-13 in the evening shift. Every UC has been provided Rs25,000 to defray expenses in this respect.—PPI
