PESHAWAR, Aug 22: The World Food Programme (WFP), which is running out of rations in Afghanistan, on Thursday transported a huge consignment of wheat from the Karachi port to Peshawar en route to Kabul.
A cargo train, carrying 10,000 metric tons of wheat, arrived at the city’s Cantt Railway Station.
The wheat will be transported from the programme’s
warehouse in Nasir Bagh, Peshawar, to Jalalabad, Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif and other areas to feed millions of vulnerable Afghans.
An official said the United Nations agency had not received additional food for the upcoming harsh cold weather in Afghanistan.
The official said that at present, the WFP had 7,000 metric tons of wheat and other food items at its Peshawar warehouse, while its total storage capacity was about 30,000 tons.
WFP officials recently stated that the shortage of funds might force the agency to cut short the size of rations for millions of destitute Afghans, because the donor agencies had yet to release cash assistance.
