WASHINGTON, Aug 19: Pakistan’s new ambassador to the United States, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, took charge on Monday, 15 days after the departure of the former ambassador, Maleeha Lodhi.
A senior diplomat with a long distinguished career, Qazi was Pakistan’s ambassador in New Delhi from 1997 to May 2002 before his posting to Washington.
India ordered him to leave the country on May 18 as part of its move to downgrade New Delhi’s relations with Islamabad. Delhi had already recalled its ambassador in Islamabad following a terrorist attack on the Indian parliament.
