KARACHI, Aug 18: Flow of money in the betting ring determined the winners in most of the events at the Karachi Summer races held here today at the local turf.
Black Magic in the third race, Welcome Shahtab in the fourth and Sapno Ki Rani in the concluding event of the day were well supported by their connections and duly obliged them.
Millennium Era in the opener, Sher Khan in the second race and My Star in the fifth race were well backed by the stable connections.
In the third race of the day, Sunday Picnic after coming in for lot of support from the followers of morning track work was deliberately galloped on way to the starting gate with the owner giving clear signal to rider Zahoor Ahmad which was noticed by the people sitting in the glass house. The horse ran out of frame and in fact was never in contention.
After the race the stewards called the owner, trainer and rider for explaining their conduct. Not being satisfied with their explanation fined the owner Rs 25,000/- trainer Abid Ali Rs 5000/- and rider Zahoor Ahmad Rs 2000/-.
It has been noticed that some owners try to misbehave with the officials of the club and get off scot free as they have some connection with the people in the glass house. It is because of this that the officials generally do not report the matter to the Managing Committee to save themselves from further humiliation.
The stewards sometimes unnecessarily change riders which results in delay and the days card is delayed by around two hours on every racing day.
Some owners and trainers complain that the stewards sometimes change the riders on those horses who stand no chance quite un-necessarily.
Riders who do not have any experience of the manners of their mount unnecessarily pressurise their charges which results in injuries to many. The stewards instead of changing riders should give strict warning to the riders and ask the Stipendiary Steward to observe the running of the horses and report the matter to the stewards who should take appropriate action against those who are found guilty.
