PESHAWAR, Aug 16: Peshawar city district government has requested the provincial government to provide Rs1 million to help it carry out  relief work in five union councils affected by torrential rain and flood two days back.

According to sources, in a communique the district government has asked for financial support to help it assist scores of families affected by the rains which flooded watercourses and nullahs passing through residential areas in parts of the district.

Several villages in five union councils in Town-II of Peshawar were flooded.

District Revenue Officer Khalid Salim Marwat, when contacted, said 300 to 400 houses were affected in Wednesday’s flood. No loss of life was reported in the city, he said.

The provincial authorities concerned, said the sources, had requested the Pakistan Red Crescent Society to provide 500 tents for distribution among the people rendered homeless.

Of the 500 tents, 80 were delivered to the district government on  Friday which were shifted to the relief centre set up by the district government at Gharri Tajak.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the city government distributed some 300 tents, Mr Marwat said.

The flood relief wing of the provincial Board of Revenue will deliver 80 tents to the city government on Saturday.

Besides, the city government, he said, had distributed bags of flour, tins of ghee and other edibles.  

Arrangements have been made to save the affected people from health hazards that may erupt due to unhygienic conditions in the affected villages falling under the jurisdiction of Mathra, Shahi Bala, Gharri Tajak and an other union councils.

Teams of doctors have been formed to carry out vaccination in the rain-hit areas. Teams of veterinary doctors have also been dispatched for vaccination.
